BURKE, VIRGINIA — The Fairfax County Public Library Board of Trustees recently honored longtime Friends of Pohick Library President and former Fairfax Library Foundation Board Member Yolanda Atkins by naming the children’s reading area at Pohick Regional Library in honor of her and her husband Bob.
In a brief ceremony held Saturday, May 20, 2023, a plaque was unveiled by Pohick Regional Library Branch Manager Andrew Pendergrass. Joining members of the Atkins family for the ceremony were Springfield District Library Trustee Phil Rosenthal, FCPL Board of Trustees Chair Brian Engler, and FCPL Director Jessica Hudson, along with a host of Pohick Library regulars and other well-wishers.
A teacher by trade, Atkins has been associated with the Friends of Pohick Regional Library for more than 30 years, serving as its president for 15 of those years and as a member of the scholarship committee for 10 years. She was instrumental in the establishment of three $2,000 Friends of Pohick Library scholarships for undergraduate students in Fairfax County. She served on the Fairfax Library Foundation Board from 2019 to 2023, and was especially influential in the planning and execution of the Foundation’s Jubilee fundraiser at Pohick Regional Library in 2018.
Since 1994, the Fairfax Library Foundation has existed solely with the mission to enhance the programs and services of the Fairfax County Public Library, the largest public library system in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Designated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable and educational organization, the Foundation provides supplementary support to the community by providing access to information, technology, innovations, civic engagement and entertainment, and by offering literacy and educational opportunities.
