Book Fair Summary:

On April 30th, 2016, Fairfax Library Foundation held its inaugural Bookfair Fundraiser at Barnes & Noble Fairfax, in order to raise support for Fairfax County Public Library.  At this event, library supporters used a special code at checkout and Barnes & Noble donates 10% of their purchase to the library.

With the overwhelming support from library lovers, a quota of $2,000 was met by lunchtime, increasing the donation percentage to 15%!  By the end of the day, Library supporters brought in $5,000 worth of sales! After the online fundraiser ends on May 5, we’ll get our final tally. But we’ve already exceeded our goal!

This event was not only a financial success – it also served as a fun, family event with crafts, children’s activities, book signings, complimentary gift wrapping, and face painting.

Abigail Fine, the Director of Development for the Foundation, stated that her favorite part of the day was “seeing how happy one boy looked when he saw the dinosaur painted on his cheek.  The boy’s father said that he then went to practice his roar in the bathroom mirror!”

Face painting by the talented Kip’s Face Painting was a highlight of the event!

08-FLF B-N Book Fair 4-30-2016The guests at Barnes & Noble also love interacting with two guest authors. Children’s author Martha Hamlett came to give a book reading of her story JUST ONE MORE GAME and Young Adult author Kathy Macmillan led a discussion with a dozen teens about her writing, publishing process, and novel, SWORD AND VERSE. Martha Hamlett even stayed to join the book fair fun!

The Barnes & Noble staff were friendly and helpful, adding to the success of this fundraising event.  Over 30 volunteers in high school and beyond came to support the library. We are grateful for all the excellent, enthusiastic help!

In addition to raising donations and family activities, Foundation board members at the fair had fun interacting with long-term and new supporters of Fairfax Library Foundation.

The Foundation is grateful for all the library supporters, special guests, volunteers and Barnes & Noble staff for making this event a huge success. We’ll be back for another Bookfair in the fall!

If you missed the book fair but still want to get in on the fun, you can still help! Shop online until May 5 at and use special code 11823689 – Barnes & Noble will donate to the library at no extra cost to you. Thanks!
